The architect of the imposing structure was alfonso torregiani who acted an order of cardinal prospero lambertini, using 2.000 scudi shields which the pope had bequeathed in 1738. the building was to be located on what was once the crossway of an ancient roman road, and later, the site of the medieval mansions of ariosti rustighelli and arrigoni. the new construction, designated to be the seat of an arch-episcopal seminary, was enriched according to the wishes of cardinal vincenzo malvezzi who entrusted francesco tadolini with its care. the wide portic and a row of rooms above it were added thus giving to the simple, harmonious and majestic facade.in 1911 the palace was converted into a hotel which under various owners, continued to be used as such until as late as 1978.the actual restoratation of the structure began in november 1985, which resulted in the demolition of some 1,400 cubic metres of extraneous additions.in the process of architectonic revaluation, those elements deemed ncongrous to the original design were eliminated and torregianis structural foundations restored. during the fourteen months of intense work, spaces were opened and lighting effects anhanced, bringing to the fore the octagonal shape of the adjoining tower of palazzo fava. thus panoramas from the baglionis windows now present unhindered views which extended from the ancient towers of bologna to the church of san luca on the southern hilltop to the modern fairgrounds and business district in the north of the city.the exclusive and highly personalized atmosphere of the baglioni stems from its interior structure and decoration designed by the noted roaman architect renato livi who succeeded in striking a perfect balance between earlier traditions and modern-day efficiency the grand hotel baglioni also offers its guests the opportunity to come into contact with important artistic testaments.the halls of palazzo fava, with its famous frescoes in which agostino, annibale and ludovico carracci depict scenes from the history of europe recall the highest artistic expressions of the sixteenth century.such a rich cultural environment adds a relaxing element to the business atmosphere of meeting and conventions.
